Frequently asked questions and answers
What should I expect at my preoperative visit for my upcoming surgery?
Approximately one to two weeks before your surgery, you will visit Dr. Zoumalan in our office for a preoperative evaluation. Dr. Zoumalan will carefully review all of your medical conditions and medications you are taking. After reviewing the procedure and answering your questions about the surgery, we will give you written instructions about where the surgery will take place (either at our surgery center or in a hospital), along with any medications, vitamins, or herbs to avoid during at least two weeks before and after your surgery. These include over-the-counter medications or vitamins that can thin your blood and cause you to bleed excessively during and after surgery. Dr. Zoumalan will likely ask your internist (or primary care physician) to perform a complete preoperative evaluation that may include blood tests, EKGs, and chest x-rays.
- If you smoke, we ask that you reduce or try to quit smoking 2-3 weeks before and after surgery so that you can heal better.
- At your preoperative visit, you will be given prescriptions for pain relievers, lubricating eye drops, anti-inflammatory eye drops, and antibiotics, in addition to any other medications you may need. Have these medications picked up before surgery.
- To be well prepared, have bags of frozen peas or cold packs ready in your freezer to use after surgery.
